Portugal's win against Croatia during the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Portugal Beat Croatia in World Cup Thriller: What Happens Next?

Croatia’s World Cup campaign came to an end in Toronto after a dramatic 2–1 defeat to Portugal in the Round of 32.

In a match that had almost everything: an early Croatian lead, a Portuguese comeback, four disallowed goals, controversial refereeing decisions and a heartbreaking finish deep into stoppage time, Portugal’s win against Croatia sent Roberto Martínez’s side into the Round of 16, where they will face Spain.

Croatia, meanwhile, bow out of the tournament after pushing one of the favourites to the limit in one of the most dramatic matches of the World Cup so far.

A match full of drama

Croatia took the lead through Ivan Perišić and looked capable of causing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. Portugal responded after the break before Gonçalo Ramos completed the comeback, but the final score tells only part of the story.

The match featured four disallowed goals, three for Croatia and one for Portugal. There was also a controversial penalty decision, two shots that struck the woodwork and several lengthy VAR reviews that repeatedly interrupted play.

The biggest talking point came deep into stoppage time. Joško Gvardiol thought he had scored an equaliser that would send the match into extra time after Mario Pašalić returned the ball across goal.

Instead, the goal was ruled out following a semi-automated offside review, with the technology determining that Igor Matanović had made the slightest contact with the ball before it reached Pašalić, leaving Croatia offside by the narrowest of margins.

It was a cruel ending for Zlatko Dalić’s side and one that will be debated by supporters long after the tournament.

What happens next after Portugal’s win against Croatia?

For Portugal, the victory keeps alive hopes of another deep World Cup run.

The Portuguese squad combines experienced stars with one of Europe’s most talented younger generations and their comeback against Croatia demonstrated both quality and composure under pressure.

However, Portugal were made to work extremely hard by Croatia. Portugal’s win against Croatia was dramatic, but Roberto Martínez’s side will know that similar performances may not be enough as the level of opposition continues to rise.

Croatia leave the tournament with their heads held high

Although Croatia are eliminated, the result should not overshadow another strong World Cup campaign.

The Vatreni advanced from a difficult group and once again demonstrated the organisation, resilience and competitive spirit that have defined Croatian football over the past decade.

For many supporters, the defeat will be particularly painful because Croatia came so close to forcing extra time. On another day, a few centimetres could have changed the outcome completely.

Even so, Croatia continue to punch above their weight on the international stage. With a population of fewer than four million people, they have remained regular contenders at the biggest tournaments, consistently competing against nations with far larger player pools.

Who will Portugal play next at the World Cup?

After Portugal’s win against Croatia, Roberto Martínez’s side move on to a Round of 16 meeting with Spain, setting up one of the biggest matches of the tournament.

The Iberian rivals have a long history of memorable encounters and with a place in the quarter-finals at stake, expectations will be enormous.

After surviving one of the most dramatic knockout matches of the World Cup, Portugal now face an even greater challenge.

A night Croatian fans will not forget

Regardless of the result, Croatia’s match against Portugal will be remembered as one of the most dramatic games of the tournament.

Disallowed goals, VAR interventions, controversial decisions, near misses and a stoppage-time heartbreak combined to create a match that will be discussed for years.

For Croatia, the World Cup ends in disappointment. For Portugal, the dream continues, with the tournament’s oldest player, Cristiano Ronaldo, still chasing one last World Cup title before retiring from football after the tournament.
