The heatwave in Croatia continues on Sunday, 2 August, with sunny and very hot weather expected in most areas and daytime highs ranging from 34°C to 39°C.
The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service, DHMZ, has warned of a high risk from the heatwave across much of the country, with the highest warning level in force for several regions.
Some daytime cloud development is possible in inland Dalmatia, with a small chance of an isolated local shower. Winds will generally be light, occasionally moderate, with southeasterly winds in the east and southwesterly winds along the coast.
Red heat warnings for five regions
The highest heatwave warning level is in force on Sunday for the Zagreb, Knin, Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik regions.
In the Zagreb region, maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 35°C, while minimum temperatures will remain above 21°C. Around Knin, daytime temperatures may rise above 39°C, with overnight lows remaining above 20°C.
The Rijeka and Split regions are forecast to see daytime temperatures above 36°C and minimum temperatures above 26°C. In the Dubrovnik region, temperatures are expected to exceed 34°C during the day and remain at or above 26°C overnight.
DHMZ has warned that extremely high temperatures are expected and has urged residents and visitors to protect themselves, children and older people, and to follow advice issued by the relevant authorities. Prolonged heat may also cause disruptions to parts of the infrastructure.
Very hot weather continues on Monday
The heatwave in Croatia continues on Monday, 3 August, with sunny and very hot conditions forecast across most of the country.
Some afternoon cloud development is possible inland, with an isolated shower most likely in mountainous Croatia, inland Istria and Dalmatia, and the Danube region.
Winds will generally remain light. At sea, a moderate southeasterly wind may blow in places before turning southwesterly later in the day.
Morning temperatures will range from 14°C to 19°C inland and from 22°C to 27°C along the Adriatic. Daytime highs will mostly be between 33°C and 38°C.
Heatwave in Croatia continues with high risk through Thursday
According to the DHMZ forecast, the heatwave in Croatia continues to pose a high or very high risk in most regions until at least Thursday, 6 August.
Zagreb and Rijeka are expected to remain at the highest risk level throughout the period from Sunday to Thursday. In Osijek and Karlovac, the highest level is forecast from Tuesday, while the risk around Knin is expected to increase again from Wednesday.
Split and Dubrovnik are forecast to remain at a high risk level on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, before returning to the highest level on Thursday. Gospić is expected to have a somewhat lower risk at the beginning of the week, although this is also forecast to rise by Thursday.
As the heatwave in Croatia continues, prolonged high daytime temperatures and very warm nights will remain especially demanding for older people, those with chronic health conditions, young children and anyone working or spending long periods outdoors. People are advised to avoid the hottest part of the day, drink enough fluids and never leave children or animals inside parked vehicles.
Mostly calm and clear conditions on the Adriatic
According to the forecast issued by the Maritime Meteorological Centre in Split, mostly clear conditions are expected across the Adriatic on Sunday. At the beginning of the forecast period, bura gusts of 35 to 40 knots are still possible below the Velebit mountain range.
Elsewhere on the Adriatic, calm conditions or southwesterly and southeasterly winds of 4 to 12 knots are expected, reaching up to 16 knots on the central and southern Adriatic. Below Velebit, bura will blow at 6 to 16 knots, initially reaching up to 20 knots.
The sea will be calm to slight, with moderate waves possible in places on the northern and southern Adriatic. Visibility will range from 10 to 20 kilometres.
During the night, calm conditions or a light southwesterly and southeasterly wind are expected. Below Velebit, a light to moderate bura may continue until morning. The sea will remain calm or slight, with mostly clear skies.
