Sinjska Alka
When: 7–9 August 2026
The Sinjska Alka is one of Croatia’s most important traditional and cultural events. The main competition takes place on 9 August at 4:30 pm, preceded by the Bara on 7 August and the Čoja on 8 August, both beginning at 5:30 pm.
During the competition, horsemen known as alkari ride at full speed and attempt to strike the centre of a small iron ring with a long lance. The tradition commemorates the defence of Sinj in 1715 and has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
