New Šibenik State Archive to Open During European Heritage Days

A new home for the State Archive in Šibenik will open on 30 September as the central event of this year’s European Heritage Days in Croatia. The opening is scheduled for noon at Velimira Škorpika 6A, bringing attention to the documents that preserve the history of Šibenik and its surrounding area.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Media, the new building has been designed to provide safer conditions for preserving and presenting written heritage dating from the 14th century to the present day.

The opening is part of a wider programme exploring how cultural heritage can be protected, restored and given new uses. This year’s events span more than 120 activities in 67 towns and settlements.

Highlights from European Heritage Days in Croatia

Šibenik’s archive is the main event, but several upcoming activities offer visitors other ways to encounter Croatia’s heritage.

At the Museum of Apoxyomenos in Mali Lošinj, the exhibition Osorski strigili runs from 30 September to 11 October. The programme lists the exhibition but gives no further description, so visitors interested in seeing it should check the museum’s current information before going.

In Rovinj, the City Museum will host a talk on 1 October about new findings from the restoration of Califfi Palace. It offers a chance to hear what work on a historic building can reveal, although the programme describes this as a lecture rather than a guided visit.

The first days of October also bring several opportunities to explore heritage outdoors. Guided visits and an exhibition at Arboretum Opeka, near Vinica, are scheduled for 2, 3, 6 and 8 October under the title Roots of the Future. On 3 October, Krka National Park will host Heritage in the Hands of the Future, a workshop and tour. The programme does not specify what the Krka tour covers or whether advance registration is required.

Further ahead, the Staro selo museum in Kumrovec has scheduled tours and workshops for children and adults on Sunday, 11 October. It is one of the programme’s more accessible options for visitors who would like to experience traditional heritage through activities as well as exhibitions.

These events show the range of European Heritage Days in Croatia: an archive built to safeguard centuries of records, museum exhibitions, the restoration of historic buildings and activities that bring visitors into parks and open-air museums.

Dates and locations of European Heritage Days in Croatia are listed in the Ministry of Culture and Media’s programme. It is best to check individual organisers for admission, booking and any changes before attending.
