An Adriatic weather warning has been issued as strong winds and thunderstorms are possible across parts of the Adriatic on Monday evening, with Croatia’s meteorological service warning of potentially dangerous conditions for small boats.
A shallow trough is moving across the Adriatic, bringing more unstable weather to the northern and central sections of the coast. Thunderstorms are possible, while wind gusts of up to 45 knots are expected locally during the evening.
Adriatic weather warning as thunderstorms develop
Cloud cover will gradually increase from the northwest during Monday, with rain becoming more likely towards the evening.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected, particularly on the northern Adriatic and in central Croatia, where some storms may be more intense.
Along the coast, light to moderate jugo will turn south-westerly around midday, followed locally by north-westerly winds during the evening. Strong gusts are possible in areas affected by thunderstorms.
Daytime temperatures will remain high, reaching between 29°C and 34°C.
Winds up to 45 knots in the evening
The marine forecast warns of possible thunderstorms across the Adriatic.
During Monday evening, north-westerly wind gusts of 35 to 45 knots, equivalent to approximately 65 to 83 km/h, are possible locally on the central Adriatic. On the northern Adriatic, south-westerly gusts of similar strength are expected.
For the first part of the forecast period, jugo and south-westerly winds of 6 to 16 knots are expected, with slight seas and locally moderate seas on the northern and central Adriatic.
Rain and thunderstorms are most likely on the northern and central Adriatic, although an isolated afternoon thunderstorm is also possible farther south.
Bura expected below Velebit on Tuesday
Conditions will remain unsettled on Tuesday, particularly during the morning.
Rain and thunderstorms are expected in places, including parts of Dalmatia, before sunnier periods become more frequent later in the day.
Along the Adriatic, moderate bura is expected in many areas, becoming strong below Velebit. Gusts of 35 to 40 knots, around 65 to 74 km/h, are possible locally in that area.
Daytime temperatures will be slightly lower, ranging from 27°C to 32°C.
Small boats should pay particular attention to local conditions
People planning to travel by small boat, kayak, SUP or other recreational craft should closely follow the latest Adriatic weather warning and marine forecast before heading out, particularly on the northern and central Adriatic.
Thunderstorms can bring rapid changes in wind direction and strength, while locally strong gusts may develop over a short period. Conditions may therefore differ considerably between nearby coastal areas and islands.
