Emergency Vets in Croatia: Where to Get Help if Your Dog Gets Sick

If your dog suddenly becomes ill or gets injured while you’re travelling in Croatia, knowing where to find an emergency vet can save valuable time.

The good news is that emergency veterinary clinics in Croatia are available in most larger cities and popular tourist destinations. However, the situation can be quite different on smaller islands and in remote areas, where veterinary care may be limited.

Before you travel, it’s also worth reading our guide Dangers for Dogs in Croatia: What Every Owner Should Know, which covers the most common hazards, including heatstroke, sea urchins, venomous snakes, ticks and other risks you may encounter during your trip.

Are there emergency vets in Croatia?

Yes. Larger cities such as Split, Zagreb, Rijeka, Zadar, Dubrovnik and Pula have veterinary clinics that provide emergency treatment or after-hours services during nights, weekends and public holidays.

On smaller islands and in rural parts of Croatia, veterinary care may be much more limited. Some islands have only one veterinary clinic with regular working hours, while others rely on visiting veterinarians from the mainland.

If your pet needs urgent treatment on one of these islands, you may need to return to the mainland by ferry before veterinary care is available. For that reason, it is a good idea to save the contact details of the nearest emergency veterinary clinic as soon as you arrive, especially if you are staying on an island or planning a road trip through several regions of Croatia.

Below you’ll find a list of emergency veterinary clinics across Croatia (updated for summer 2026).

What to do before visiting an emergency vet

Before setting off, it is always worth calling the clinic first. Some veterinary practices provide a true 24-hour emergency service, while others operate on an on-call basis outside regular opening hours.

If you are staying on an island, ask whether emergency treatment is available locally or whether you should travel to the mainland. During the busy summer season, knowing this in advance can save valuable time.

It is also a good idea to save the clinic’s location in Google Maps before you need it. Finding an unfamiliar address late at night in a town you don’t know can add unnecessary stress during an emergency.

Emergency veterinary clinics in Croatia

Always call before you arrive. If you’re calling from a foreign phone number, dial +385 or 00385, followed by the area code without the leading 0. For example: +385 91 xxx xxxx or +385 21 xxx xxx. If you’re calling from a Croatian phone number, simply omit +385 and add a leading 0 instead. For example: 091 xxx xxxx or 020 xxx xxx.
