Traffic was heavy in both directions over the weekend on major roads between the coast and inland areas, along the Adriatic coast and at most border crossings, according to the latest Croatia road conditions report from HAK. Delays have been reported near roadworks, toll stations, rest areas and tunnels.
Heavy traffic is expected to continue on Monday, when driving conditions could be further affected by strong showers, water on the roads, possible landslides and bura winds in northern Dalmatia.
Accidents and queues on major motorways
An accident occurred on the A1 motorway before the Demerje toll station in the direction of Zagreb, and traffic is moving slowly in one lane. The queue at Demerje towards Zagreb is around three kilometres long.
A queue of around two kilometres has formed before the Sveti Rok tunnel in the direction of Dubrovnik, after vehicles were removed from the tunnel. Traffic is moving in slow-moving queues with occasional delays between the Novigrad and Bosiljevo II junctions towards the coast, as well as between Ogulin and Bosiljevo I and between Karlovac and the Lučko toll station towards Zagreb.
On the A2 Zagreb–Macelj motorway, the queue at the Trakošćan toll station towards Zagreb is around two kilometres long and extends into Slovenia. An accident near the Sveti Križ Začretje junction is also slowing traffic towards Zagreb.
At the Bajakovo border crossing on the A3 motorway, the queue of cars and lorries is around four kilometres long. Traffic is also moving slowly on the DC1 state road between Gračac and Knin, near roadworks at Otrić.
Roadworks and wind restrictions
HAK’s latest Croatia road conditions report also warns of numerous roadworks and temporary traffic restrictions. Traffic is moving on narrowed lanes or a single lane on parts of the A2, A3, A4 and A7 motorways and the Istrian Y motorway network. Near the Zaprešić junction, some access roads towards the DC1 and Westgate are closed until 24 July, with traffic being diverted.
Due to strong winds, double-decker buses, motorcycles and vehicles towing trailers are banned in both directions on the A7 between the Rijeka istok and Šmrika junctions.
Short overnight traffic stops are also possible on some motorways to allow oversized vehicles to pass. The closures may last up to 15 minutes, including on the A1 near Bisko, Karlovac, Demerje and Lučko, as well as on the A4 and A6.
Dubrovnik–Korčula catamaran service suspended
The Dubrovnik–Korčula catamaran service has been suspended due to technical problems.
Other ferry and catamaran services are operating as normal, although longer waiting times are possible at ferry ports and terminals due to increased vehicle traffic.
Storms, strong bura and more traffic expected on Monday
HAK has warned of difficult driving conditions on Monday, 20 July, due to strong thunderstorms. There is an increased risk of flooded roads and landslides in some areas, particularly along the coast and in the mountainous regions of Croatia.
During the morning, strong bura winds could lead to restrictions or closures for certain types of vehicles on roads in northern Dalmatia.
Heavy traffic between the coast and inland areas is expected throughout the day in both directions. Delays are possible on the A1 between Bosiljevo II and the Lučko toll station, on the A2 near the Zagreb zapad junction, on the A4 between Popovec and Zagreb istok, on the Istrian Y between the junction and the Učka tunnel, and on the DC1 near Otrić.
Longer waiting times are also possible at most border crossings with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro.
In the latest Croatia road conditions report, HAK has advised drivers to adjust their speed to the road and weather conditions and to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
