A safety investigation has been launched into the Split Airport incident involving an Iberia Airbus A320 during landing on Saturday, 1 August.
According to Croatia’s Air, Maritime and Railway Accident Investigation Agency, the aircraft, operating flight IB0945 from Madrid, sustained damage to its nose landing gear during landing at approximately 4:22 p.m. local time.
The aircraft came to a stop on the runway, and all passengers were safely evacuated. There were 172 passengers and six crew members on board, and no injuries were reported. The aircraft sustained minor material damage.
Runway reopened after Split Airport incident
Split Airport said the aircraft remained stopped on the runway after a tyre on the nose landing gear burst during landing.
According to HRT, all 172 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. Passengers were then taken to the terminal to collect their baggage and continue their journeys.
The runway was temporarily closed while the aircraft was removed and the necessary safety checks were completed. It reopened at 6:30 p.m. local time.
The Split Airport incident came one day after flight operations were also temporarily suspended because of a drone spotted near the runway.
Safety investigation launched
Croatia’s Air, Maritime and Railway Accident Investigation Agency said it was notified of the Split Airport incident immediately by Split Airport and the Ministry of the Interior’s Operational Communication Centre.
In accordance with Regulation (EU) No 996/2010, the agency has formally opened a safety investigation into the incident.
The agency stated that the investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the serious occurrence and establish any safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
