Croatia Weather Update for August 21, 2026
Thunderstorms and strong winds across Croatia, hotter and drier in the south
The weather in Croatia on Friday will be partly to mostly cloudy with sunny periods, with rain in places and locally heavy thunderstorms, particularly in the northern Adriatic, Gorski Kotar and central Croatia, according to DHMZ.
The far east and south of the country will see the most sunshine, with mainly dry and hot conditions.
Winds will be light to moderate from the southwest, becoming strong at higher elevations. On the Adriatic, moderate to strong jugo and southerly winds are expected, turning abruptly to southwesterly and westerly winds in the afternoon, with storm-force gusts possible for a time.
Daytime temperatures will generally range from 27°C to 32°C, reaching around 36°C in eastern Croatia.
Weather warnings issued across Croatia
DHMZ has issued yellow weather warnings for almost all regions of Croatia on Friday, primarily due to thunderstorms and strong winds.
In the Split region, strong jugo is expected in places before abruptly turning southwesterly during the afternoon. Mean wind speeds may exceed 40 km/h.
The Rijeka region faces a risk of thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall, hail and strong winds. Gusts may exceed 65 km/h, with 40 to 70 mm of rain possible and the probability of thunderstorms above 80%.
In the Zagreb region, locally heavy thunderstorms are possible overnight and again from around midday, accompanied by temporarily strong winds. Gusts may exceed 55 km/h, with the probability of thunderstorms above 60%.
A yellow heat warning is in effect for the Dubrovnik region, where maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 32°C.
Adriatic weather warning for sailors
A warning is also in effect for the northern and central Adriatic, where thunderstorms are possible along with gusts of jugo and southwesterly winds reaching 35 to 45 knots.
A trough with a frontal disturbance is currently moving across part of the Adriatic.
During the first 12 hours, jugo and southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 knots are expected, reaching up to 24 knots in places on the central Adriatic and locally up to 28 knots on the northern Adriatic.
The sea will generally be slight to moderate, reaching moderate to rough conditions in the northern and central Adriatic. Visibility will range from 10 to 20 kilometres. Conditions will be mostly clear in the south, while the northern and central Adriatic will be partly to mostly cloudy, with rain and thunderstorms in places.
Adriatic forecast for the following 12 hours
Moderate to fresh jugo and southwesterly winds, locally strong over the central and northern Adriatic, will weaken during the night. Winds over the central and southern Adriatic will turn northwesterly and become light to moderate.
The sea will be slight to moderate, but may remain rough in places over the northern and central Adriatic.
Conditions will remain mostly clear in the south, while the northern and central Adriatic will be partly to mostly cloudy with occasional rain and thunderstorms.
Croatia weather forecast for Saturday
The weather in Croatia on Saturday will be partly to mostly cloudy, with some rain still possible, mainly during the first part of the day in inland areas and the wider Rijeka region, according to DHMZ. Conditions are expected to become sunnier during the afternoon.
Winds will be light to moderate from the north and northeast, with northwesterly winds in eastern Croatia. On the Adriatic, moderate southwesterly and northwesterly winds are possible in places.
Morning temperatures will range from 17°C to 21°C inland and between 20°C and 25°C along the Adriatic, with even higher temperatures possible in the south.
Maximum daytime temperatures will range from 24°C to 29°C across much of the country, while eastern Croatia and Dalmatia will be warmer, with temperatures between 29°C and 34°C.

Hot weather in Croatia today, stormier Friday ahead
According to DHMZ, hot weather in Croatia will continue today, with temperatures reaching 31 to 36°C and locally even higher in the east. Most of the country will be sunny, although conditions will be less stable on the northern Adriatic and in Gorska and central Croatia, where local rain and thunderstorms are possible and may become stronger during the evening. Gusty south-westerly winds are also expected, with jugo along the coast.
Friday brings a greater risk of thunderstorms
Friday will bring more changeable and cloudy weather, with rain and stronger thunderstorms possible, particularly on the northern Adriatic and in Gorska and central Croatia. The far east and south are expected to stay sunnier and mostly dry, while daytime temperatures will fall to around 27–32°C in most areas, remaining close to 36°C in the east.
Croatia Weather Update for August 19, 2026
Weather in Croatia: Hot and sunny, thunderstorms possible on northern Adriatic
Croatia will remain mostly sunny and hot on Wednesday, with daytime temperatures reaching between 29 and 33°C. Winds will generally be light to moderate, while southerly winds over the Adriatic are expected to strengthen towards the end of the day.
Thursday will be hotter, with temperatures generally between 30 and 35°C. Most of the country will remain sunny, but conditions will become increasingly unstable in the north.
More cloud is expected over the northern Adriatic and Gorski kotar, where rain may develop. Locally stronger thunderstorms are possible during the late afternoon and evening.
Warning for sailors on the northern Adriatic
DHMZ has issued a warning for possible thunderstorms on the northern Adriatic on Thursday as a frontal disturbance gradually approaches from the northwest.
Southerly winds will strengthen during Wednesday evening, particularly over the central and northern Adriatic, reaching 10 to 20 knots. The sea will become slight to moderate.
During the following 12 hours, moderate to fresh jugo and southerly winds are expected, with southwesterly winds also possible over the northern Adriatic. Rain, showers and thunderstorms may develop there, initially in the far north.
Heat and changing conditions on Thursday
Thursday will bring moderate heat-health risk to central and eastern Croatia. People sensitive to weather changes may also experience discomfort associated with southerly winds.
The weather in Croatia will become increasingly unstable later on Thursday, particularly in Istria and along the northern Adriatic.
A further deterioration is expected on Friday as the frontal system approaches from the west, with unstable weather becoming more likely in western Croatia and along the northern Adriatic.
