Bačvice Beach is Split’s best-known city beach and one of the few sandy beaches along Croatia’s Adriatic coast. Thanks to its shallow water, central location and long-standing local tradition, it remains a favourite among both Split residents and visitors looking to combine sightseeing with a day at the beach.
Location of Bačvice beach in Split
Bačvice Beach is located in the Bačvice area, just east of Split Harbour and around a 15-minute walk from the Riva promenade and Diocletian’s Palace. Its location just a short distance from the city centre makes it the easiest beach in Split to reach on foot.
The wider Bačvice area includes several smaller beaches, a seaside promenade and numerous cafés and restaurants, making it one of the liveliest parts of the city during the summer months.
What is Bačvice beach like?
Bačvice is a sandy beach with an exceptionally shallow entrance to the sea. Its fine sand makes it quite different from most other beaches in Split and along the Croatian coast. The sea is usually calm and remains shallow for a considerable distance, making it ideal for children and less confident swimmers.
If you enjoy swimming in deeper water, however, Bačvice may not be the best choice. On the main beach, you’ll need to walk quite a long way before the water even reaches your knees.
Bačvice is also the birthplace of picigin, Split’s traditional ball game played in shallow water. At almost any time of year, you’ll find groups of locals playing, regardless of the weather.
The beach is fully developed and becomes particularly lively during the summer, especially in the afternoon when both locals and tourists gather here.
Facilities
Bačvice offers showers, changing cabins, public toilets and plenty of benches along the promenade. There is one café directly on the beach, while numerous cafés, bars and restaurants are located just a few metres away.
You’ll also find a kiosk at the entrance to the beach area for drinks, snacks and other essentials.
The beach itself is quite spacious. The main sandy section has very little shade, while the surrounding concrete terraces are shaded by tamarisk trees and include built-in seating areas.
Sun loungers and umbrellas are available to rent during the summer season.
The atmosphere changes throughout the day. Mornings are generally quieter and popular with families and locals, while evenings see the surrounding cafés and bars turn Bačvice into one of Split’s most popular nightlife areas.
How to get to Bačvice Beach
One of Bačvice’s biggest advantages is its location. From Split city centre, the beach is around a 15-minute walk away, meaning most visitors won’t need a car or public transport.
If you’re staying in another part of the city, several Promet Split bus routes stop nearby. The beach is only about a five-minute walk from Split’s main bus station and ferry port, making it easily accessible for day visitors and travellers arriving from elsewhere in Dalmatia.
Parking
There are several public car parks close to the beach, although finding a space during July and August can be difficult. Traffic is particularly heavy during weekends and ferry changeover days because of Bačvice’s proximity to both the city centre and Split Harbour.
If you’re staying in central Split, walking to the beach is by far the easiest option.
Who is Bačvice Beach suitable for?
Bačvice is an excellent choice for families with children, less confident swimmers and anyone who prefers sandy beaches. The shallow water makes swimming safe even for young children, while visitors interested in local culture can watch or even join a game of picigin.
Children especially enjoy Bačvice thanks to its soft sand, which is perfect for building sandcastles. Since the main beach is open, well-organised and easy to supervise, parents generally don’t have to worry about children wandering out of sight.
If your idea of a perfect beach day involves swimming in deep water, Bačvice may leave you slightly disappointed. The shallow water extends a long way from the shore. However, just around 20 metres away you’ll find access points where the sea becomes much deeper.
If you’re looking for peace and a more natural setting, some of Split’s other beaches may suit you better. But if you’d like to experience the city’s beach culture just minutes from the historic centre, Bačvice is hard to beat.
Accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility
Bačvice Beach is one of the few officially accessible beaches in Split and includes a designated area for visitors with disabilities. A paved access ramp leads from the parking area and promenade all the way to the shoreline, continuing into the shallow water to provide easier access to the sea.
Because the water remains very shallow for a considerable distance and the seabed is made up of fine sand, wheelchair users may find it difficult to move independently once in the water. Depending on individual mobility needs, some visitors may require assistance.
Good to know
To avoid the biggest crowds, it’s best to visit Bačvice before 9 a.m. or later in the afternoon. During summer evenings, both the beach and the promenade become some of the liveliest places in Split, so it’s worth staying after sunset to experience a completely different atmosphere.
Late at night, especially during summer, young people and tourists often gather on the beach to socialise and listen to music. However, keep in mind that Bačvice is a supervised public beach where bringing alcohol is not permitted and breaking the rules may result in a fine.
