Naturist swimming remains permitted on the part of Lokrum’s coastline where it has been practised for decades. Following the removal of the old FKK sign, reactions from Dubrovnik residents and the launch of a petition, the Lokrum Reserve Public Institution has installed a new information sign.
The move confirms that the Lokrum nudist beach remains open to all visitors, whether they choose to swim with or without a swimsuit.
The new sign was installed shortly after the removal of the previous one prompted a strong public response. Concerns grew after the change was interpreted as bringing an end to the island’s long-established naturist tradition.
Following the removal of the old sign, the Lokrum Reserve explained that the sign itself did not determine the legal status of this part of the coastline. Its removal therefore did not constitute a ban on naturist swimming or the closure of the beach.
Petition calls for the tradition to be protected
After the sign disappeared, a group of residents launched an online petition titled “We Want a Nudist Beach on Lokrum”.
Those behind the petition called on the relevant authorities to establish a legal framework that would allow the island’s naturist tradition to continue. They pointed out that this part of the coastline has been used for naturist swimming since the mid-1960s.
According to the petition, signs marking the bathing area for nudists were installed above the rocks on the eastern side of Lokrum following the establishment of the Lokrum Reserve.
Lokrum nudist beach is not designated for exclusive use
The new sign clearly informs visitors that naturist swimming is permitted along this part of the coast. However, it does not designate the location as a beach for a specific purpose, restrict access or exclude visitors who choose to wear swimsuits.
It is a public natural beach that remains equally accessible to everyone. The sign simply informs visitors about a practice that has continued at the location for generations.
Rules will be defined more precisely
In March 2026, the Lokrum Reserve Public Institution began preparing a Maritime Domain Management Plan for the protected area. The use of the natural beaches managed by the institution will be defined more precisely through the plan and a future maritime order.
The institution emphasised that an information sign does not change the legal status of the coastline. Its purpose is to let visitors know that naturist swimming is permitted and reduce the possibility of misunderstandings between beachgoers.
The tradition will therefore continue at a location known to generations of Dubrovnik residents and visitors as the Lokrum nudist beach, while respecting the law, privacy and everyone’s equal right to access the coast.
“Lokrum remains a place of freedom, tolerance and mutual respect,” the Lokrum Reserve Public Institution said.
Where to find the Lokrum nudist beach
Visitors will find the Lokrum nudist beach along the island’s south-eastern coast, on a secluded stretch of flat rocks overlooking the Adriatic.
The coastline extends for approximately 300 metres. Instead of a conventional pebble or sandy beach, it consists of large natural rock platforms from which visitors can enter the sea. Its secluded setting, rocky shoreline and proximity to Dubrovnik have helped make it one of the best-known places for naturist swimming in southern Croatia.
