Žnjan Beach has been completely redeveloped and is now one of Croatia’s most modern seaside recreation areas. With more than a kilometre of pebble beaches, a wide promenade, excellent facilities and plenty of space, it’s an ideal choice for families, active travellers and anyone planning to spend an entire day by the sea.
Location
Žnjan Beach is located in the Žnjan area, on the eastern side of Split, around four kilometres from the city centre. Stretching along the bay of the same name, it forms part of a newly redeveloped waterfront overlooking the Brač Channel and the open Adriatic.
Unlike Split’s older city beaches, Žnjan is characterised by wide pedestrian areas, landscaped green spaces and an open waterfront, giving the entire area the feel of a completely new part of the city.
What is the Žnjan Beach like?
Žnjan is made up of several large, well-maintained pebble beaches with a gradual entrance into the sea. The small pebbles and clean water make it suitable for visitors of all ages, while its size means it rarely feels overcrowded, even during the busiest weeks of summer.
The beach is divided into several sections, making it easy to find a place to swim or sunbathe without feeling surrounded by crowds. The sea is generally calm, while the open location often brings a welcome breeze during the hottest part of the day.
Facilities at Žnjan Beach
One of Žnjan’s greatest strengths is the range of facilities available. Along the promenade you’ll find cafés, restaurants, children’s playgrounds, sports courts, showers, changing cabins, public toilets and plenty of space for walking and recreation.
There are also beach volleyball and basketball courts, a skate park, an outdoor gym and several other recreational areas, making Žnjan one of the most active beach areas in Split.
Sun loungers and umbrellas are available to rent during the summer, while the wide promenade attracts many visitors who simply come for a walk, a coffee or an evening by the sea.
There is very little natural shade, so during the hottest hours it’s best to make use of the shaded structures along the promenade or rent a sun umbrella.
How to get to Žnjan Beach
Žnjan is around a ten-minute drive from Split city centre. Several Promet Split bus routes serve the area. If you are travelling to Žnjan Beach from the city centre, you can take bus number 15 from the main bus station and ferry port area. Buses 7 and 8 run from the West Coast and Zvončac and bus 13 serves the beach from Spinut.
There are also other bus routes connecting Žnjan Beach with different parts of the city, depending on where you are travelling from.
For many visitors, however, Uber is the easiest option. Uber cars are widely available in Split during summer, fares are usually reasonable and you can be dropped close to the beach without having to worry about paying for parking.
Žnjan Beach can also be reached by bicycle. If you prefer walking, the coastal route from the city centre usually takes between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on where you start.
Parking at Žnjan Beach
One of Žnjan’s biggest advantages is the large number of parking spaces available close to the beach.
Although the area becomes busy during July and August, finding a parking space is usually much easier than at most other beaches in Split thanks to the newly built parking areas and garages. Parking at Žnjan Beach costs €1 per hour.
Who is Žnjan Beach suitable for?
Žnjan is an excellent choice for young visitors, families with children, active travellers and anyone wanting to spend an entire day by the sea. Its wide open spaces, numerous facilities and easy access also make it ideal for larger groups of friends.
If you’re looking for a small hidden cove or the shade of pine trees, other beaches in Split may be a better fit. But if you want a modern city beach with excellent facilities, Žnjan is hard to beat.
Accessible beach for visitors with disabilities
Žnjan is home to one of the best-equipped accessible beaches in Split for visitors with disabilities. It offers step-free access, ramps, a disabled access lift and additional facilities that make access to both the beach and the sea easier for visitors with reduced mobility.
Accessible parking is available next to the beach and the accessible section forms part of the main bathing area rather than being separated from it, allowing visitors with disabilities to enjoy the beach alongside everyone else.
Good to know
If you’re planning to spend the whole day at Žnjan, there’s no need to bring food or drinks, as you’ll find plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby. However, keep in mind that prices are generally higher than in most other parts of Split.
Because the beach is very open and offers little natural shade, it’s worth bringing a hat, sunscreen or another form of sun protection, especially if you’re visiting between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
